Here’s a quick screen shot of my Google Analytics stats from yesterday.

Bear in mind I’ve been away and haven’t posted recently so my traffic has been virtually nil. This is reflected in my Alexa ranking which dropped into the millions again.
I want to show you exactly what I did to grab this quick boost to my traffic so you can do the same.
I spent a few hours sifting through Twitter and adding people who I thought were both interesting and whom I’d like to network with.
I didn’t just blindly add people. I made sure to check out their page and tweets to see if they are people that I actually want to network with.
Tip: As a starting point, view the people your friends are following and those who follow them.
Twitter sets an initial limit of 2000 on the amount of people you can follow. Once you have 2000 followers yourself you can start to follow more than this limit.
People often debate the merits of following so many people but for me, the more the merrier! This way you can visit Twitter at any hour and find someone to tweet with.
Sneaky tip: You could lift this limit more quickly by unfollowing those that don’t follow you back and adding more that hopefully will. Once you’re beyond 2000 followers and the limit is lifted, re-add those that you unfollowed if desired.
As I write this I have 871 followers and rising as people log into their accounts today to follow me. You should also note that I added several leads on the back of this traffic too.
Be sure to have a link back to your website in your Twitter profile or this won’t work! Don’t forget to follow me here: http://twitter.com/JohnSzram and I’ll follow you back!
You might also want to get a Twitter Counter like the one you can see in my stats menu. Happy Tweeting!
Yes, you are right on the money! I notice a big jump on Alexa as soon as I put Twitter and Twitter counter on my blog: http://michaelacernescu.com
At this point I have only 300 followers, but the number is increasing daily. I also connect my broadcasting emails through aweber with Twitter, you have just to mark a button, and my Squidoo lenses as well.
All the best
Michaela
Nice post John and great to see your excellent blog being updated again.
Good strategy. As an addition if you only wanted to follow a small number of people, but still wanted to implement this strategy, a cool work around is to subscribe to the RSS feed of those that you want to ‘follow’.
This way you can still follow 2,000 people AND you can still avoid the clutter and keep upto date with those you really want to follow via your RSS reader.
Great post!

Thanks Lee,
I recently implemented something similar so that I can read my @johnszram messages in Google Reader.
I visited http://search.twitter.com/ and typed @johnszram into the search box.
At the top right of the following page I clicked the “Feed for this query” and subscribed.
You could do this for any search query to stay informed about a particular topic or perhaps to find people that are tweeting about similar interests.
Thanks again for the tip!

That’s a brilliant idea…. you learn something new everyday!
Thanks for another sweet tip!

Another good way to organise your Twitter followers is to use TweetDeck. You can divide all your followers up into different sections and display whichever sections you wish.

Thanks Paula,
I notice a lot of people post to Twitter from TweetDeck. Haven’t got round to looking at it yet.
I’ll be sure to check it out after your recommendation!
Thanks!
